In Greater Christchurch Zone we have an amazing core team of leaders who have run Pinewood Derby for many, many years. The whole team makes cars to race each year, and to keep things fun we started agreeing a special theme for the cars the derby crew make.
This year we have formalised this into our “Crew Challenge”. Any leaders who help at one of our pinewood working bees, or help over our derby week-end are eligible to join in on this challenge.
The cars that enter this challenge are made to our Cre-8-tor class rules. These can be a bit longer, wider and heavier than standard pinewood car rules. They also have to use 6 or 8 wheels (on single or double axles). The cre-8-tor class is intended to give builders a bit more creative freedom in their car designs.
As well as being a bit of fun the the leaders, the cars also serve to inspire Scouts to try something different with a Cre-8-tor class car for the next year.
2024
In 2024 the Crew Challenge theme was “Wacky Races”. We each picked a different Wacky Races vehicle: The Creepy Coupe, The Convert-a-Car, The Crimson Hayballer, The Compact Pussycat, The Army Surplus Special, The Buzz Wagon.
The Delorian, Snoopy Mobile and Scooby Doo van were from a previous year.
2025
